Spanning approximately 1.5 miles, Thames street is located at the heart of Newport’s downtown area. This street is hopping with foot traffic all day long and on through the night. Newport has been home to the well-known annual Folk Festival, held at Fort Adams State Park in each summer since 1959 when it was founded by George Wein. Another great festival founded by George Wein, in 1954 the Newport Jazz festival was the first of its kind to catch fire in the United States. Since then, legendary jazz performers such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis have taken the stage in Newport.
