As one of the great fishing towns in the area Newport is definitely a place where you will want to get out and try your hand at the reel. Newport’s well-known Cliff Walk was the first of its kind in New England when it was built in 1975. Spanning 3.5 miles, this trail delights trekkers of all ages with its beautiful ocean views, plant life, and panoramas of the historic Mansions.
For a typical coastal New England beach-day treat, a trip to Eason’s Beach is a must. Stop by the snack shack and try a famous twin lobster roll while enjoying the beautiful ocean view. Newport has been home to the well-known annual Folk Festival, held at Fort Adams State Park in each summer since 1959 when it was founded by George Wein. Musicians such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and The Pixies are among the many famous artists who have wowed festival-goers with their live talent over the years. Be sure to purchase tickets in advance and get ready for two days of great music, food, crafts and memories.
Tennis enthusiasts cannot miss this epic Hall of Fame, which has indicted tennis stars Arthur Ashe, Billie Jean King, Pete Sampras and Andrea Agassi, among many other talented pros throughout the years. Plan a visit to check out an exhibition match, visit the museum, or even sign up for a lesson on the beautifully manicured grass courts and be inspired by the many legends that have walked these grounds.
Another great festival founded by George Wein, in 1954 the Newport Jazz festival was the first of its kind to catch fire in the United States. Since then, legendary jazz performers such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis have taken the stage in Newport. Every year international jazz enthusiast’s travel to this beautiful destination to be awed by the latest Jazz gurus and to take in the sites of the beautiful city.
Few would consider a trip to Newport complete without a visit to the infamous Mansions that line the shoreline of historic Newport. Spanning approximately 1.5 miles, Thames street is located at the heart of Newport’s downtown area. This street is hopping with foot traffic all day long and on through the night. Adorned with shops, top-notch restaurants, bars and a great night life scene, visitors will find themselves coming back to Thames Street to visit all their favorite local hot spots.
